Not every cooling problem is just an inconvenience, and your AC doesn’t have to fully shut down for there to be an emergency. Some issues signal serious trouble and need immediate attention to protect your home, your comfort, and your safety. If you're noticing any of the warning signs below, it’s time to call Chapman Heating and Cooling for emergency air conditioning repair right away.
Here are common AC issues that should never wait:
If your system is running but blowing warm air or no air at all, your compressor may be failing or the refrigerant may be leaking. Waiting can lead to bigger, costlier damage.
A burning odor or signs of smoke could mean electrical failure or motor problems. Shut off your system and call for emergency service immediately.
Loud, unusual noises are never normal. They often signal a failing motor, loose parts, or a compressor issue that could cause system-wide damage.
Frozen coils or puddles near the unit could point to a refrigerant leak or airflow issue. These problems not only reduce cooling but may also damage your compressor.
If your AC is completely unresponsive, there could be an electrical issue, safety switch trip, or major system failure, all of which require urgent attention.
Frequent cycling can strain your system and increase energy bills. It may also be a sign of failing components or incorrect sizing.
Not every AC problem is a true emergency. If you're noticing any of the following, it's usually safe to schedule a standard AC repair appointment rather than call for emergency service:
If your home is still cooling reasonably well and you're not dealing with extreme heat, strong burning smells, water leaking, or a complete system shutdown, our team can get you on the schedule at a convenient time. It sounds simple, but it happens more than you'd think. Make sure your thermostat is set to "Cool" and not "Heat" or "Off," and confirm the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature. If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, double check that a schedule or hold setting hasn't overridden what you expected.
AC units can trip a breaker, especially during periods of heavy use in our Louisville summers. Head to your electrical panel and look for a breaker that's flipped to the middle or "off" position. If you find one, switch it fully off and then back on. If it trips again right away, that's a sign of a bigger issue, and it's time to give us a call.
A dirty, clogged filter is one of the most common culprits behind AC trouble. When airflow gets blocked, your system can struggle to cool your home or even shut down to protect itself. Pull your filter out and hold it up to the light. If you can't see light through it, it's time for a fresh one.
Walk through your home and make sure supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. Furniture, rugs, curtains, or boxes can block airflow without you realizing it, making your system work harder than it should.
Your outdoor condenser needs room to breathe. Take a look and clear away any leaves, grass clippings, mulch, or debris that may have built up around it. Give it at least a couple feet of clearance on all sides so air can flow freely.
An air conditioning breakdown can throw your whole day into chaos, but getting help shouldn’t add to the stress. With Chapman Heating and Cooling, you get fast, honest, and expert emergency AC repair from a team that keeps you informed and always treats you like family.

An AC emergency is any situation where your system stops cooling completely, poses a safety risk, or could cause damage to your home if left unaddressed. This includes a total system shutdown during extreme heat, burning smells, visible water leaking or flooding, electrical issues like sparking or tripped breakers that won't reset, or ice buildup on the unit. If your home is unsafe or uncomfortable to the point of health concerns for children, elderly family members, or pets, that's an emergency. too.
Yes, you should turn off your AC if it starts making loud, unusual noises like grinding, banging, or squealing. Continuing to run the system can turn a minor issue into a major repair by causing further damage to internal components. Switch the thermostat to "off" and call Chapman Heating and Cooling so a technician can safely diagnose the problem.
Before calling for emergency AC repair, check your thermostat settings, breaker panel, air filter, vents, and outdoor unit clearance. Confirm the thermostat is set to "Cool," look for a tripped breaker, inspect the filter for buildup, make sure vents aren't blocked, and clear debris away from the outdoor condenser. These quick checks solve the problem in some cases and can save you a service call.
Yes, a clogged filter can cause an AC emergency. When airflow is restricted, your system can overheat, freeze up, or shut down entirely to protect itself, leaving your home without cooling. Regularly replacing your air filter is one of the simplest ways to prevent this from happening.
No, warm-air issues don't always require emergency HVAC service in Louisville. If your home is still cooling somewhat, just not as effectively as usual, it's often safe to schedule a standard appointment. Emergency service is needed when your home isn't cooling at all, especially during extreme heat, or when warm air is paired with other warning signs like strange smells or electrical issues.
Regular AC maintenance helps prevent emergency AC repairs by catching small issues, like worn parts, low refrigerant, or dirty components, before they turn into full system failures. Seasonal tune ups from Chapman Heating and Cooling keep your system running efficiently and reduce the chances of an unexpected breakdown during the hottest days of the year.
Our whole house humidifier was not working and we called Chapman Heating to check on it. Our technician, Michael, checked our furnace and humidifier and determined that the furnace had a part that was not working properly. He had the part ordered. He returned when the part was available and installed the part and determined humidifier was working properly but the thermostat was not set to operate the humidifier. He reset the thermostat and the humidifier is working perfectly. Michael was very efficient and knowledgeable and made the needed repairs to our system. His work was 5 star. I would give him and Chapman 10 stars if possible.
Jeremy and Alan were both great. We had a difficult situation that needed to be addressed and I appreciate their professional and pleasant problem-solving skills. Jeremy has been here before and always been very good at listening to concerns and has incredible work ethics! After being very frustrated for a few months, it was nice to see our concern being addressed and issues corrected.
Michael was the most patient and knowledgeable service tech from beginning to end. He was polite and courteous and put on booties over his shoes everytime he entered my home. He took the time to show and explain things to me in a way I’d understand. We wouldn’t call anyone else to service our HVAC.
